The 'Undoing' actor first starred alongside the 'Judy' star in 2001's 'Bridget Jones's Diary' before they reunited in 2004 for the sequel, 'Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason'.

The 60-year-old actor has revealed he and Renee, 51, regularly keep in touch and "still" send each other "long emails".

He told SiriusXM's 'The Jess Cagle Show': "I love Renée. Uh, she's one of the few actresses I haven't fallen out with...

"And, we, we got on very well together and, we still exchange long emails."

The 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' actor hailed Renee "a good egg" and quipped that her rather long emails are "quite hard to decipher".

Hugh added: "Hers in particular, at least 70 pages each, interesting stuff, but quite hard to decipher.

"She's a properly good egg and a genius. Did you see her Judy Garland? About as good as acting gets."

Renee - who played the titular role of Bridget Jones - went on to star in a third film in the hit rom-com franchise, 2016's 'Bridget Jones's Baby', and although Hugh's character Daniel Cleaver was involved in the storyline, he did not appear.

In 2016, Hugh recalled the female co-stars who "loathe, despise and hate" him.

Of his 'Nine Months' co-star Julianne Moore, he said: "Brilliant actress, loathes me."

Speaking about his fellow 'About a Boy' cast mate Rachel Weisz, he said: "Clever, beautiful, despises me."

Hugh then claimed he made Drew Barrymore "cry" on the set of 'Music and Lyrics'.

He noted: "Made her cry, hates me."

The 'Florence Foster Jenkins' actor then claimed the '50 First Dates' star gave him notes while working on the 2007 rom-com musical, in which he played has-been 80s pop star Alex Fletcher, who her alter ego Sophie Fisher falls in love with.

He added: “She made the mistake of giving me notes."
