The 63-year-old actor scooped the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie accolade for his performance as outlaw Frank Griffin in 'Godless' and dedicated the honour to the horse he rode in the mini-series, even though he'd had his difficulties with the creature that resulted in him getting injured.

Ending his speech, he said: "I would also finally like to thank my horse, Apollo.

"He was Jeff Bridges' horse on 'True Grit' and I felt he was making unfair comparisons. Three times he threw me off the horse. Three times! The third and last time, I broke my wrist - literally broke my wrist. It was my left wrist."

Raising his statuette into the air with his left hand, he added: "It's now officially healed."

Earlier in his speech, Jeff admitted he'd lied about his horse riding ability to land his part in the Western series.

The Hollywood star - who has been married to his college sweetheart Kathleen since 1979 - quipped: "Little tip for you young actors. When they call and say can you ride a horse, don't lie. You will find on day one you're in the Kentucky Derby."

Meanwhile, Jeff's co-star, Merritt Wever, gave a very brief speech as she nervously accepted her prize for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie.

Struggling to open her piece of paper with her speech on it, she said: "I hope you don't mistake my fear for a lack of gratitude...

"I came prepared and it's bombing already. I wanted to be a grown-up about this."
