Jessica Chastain has revealed how she was labelled "ugly" by school bullies.

Actress Jessica Chastain was the victim of cruel playground taunts while growing up in California, revealing that the experience shattered her confidence as a child.

Jessica Chastain bullied at school

During her school yeas she says she was told every day at school that she was ugly and that no one wanted to be her friend.

The experience has made Chastain determined to do anything to help young girls and to be a 'cheerleader' for people who sometimes have low self-esteem.

After overcoming her school tormentors, the now 37-year-old has gone on to achieve success on screen but is adamant she would have gone off the rails if she had achieved fame in her teenage years.

Jessica Chastain now champions the bullied

She is quoted by Glamour as saying "I would have been a disaster. If I was 19 and I had the attention that I'm getting now, I would have just said stupid things. I would have partied more.

"All these expensive dinners and people giving me champagne? All these stupid things that we criticise 19 year olds for doing when they're famous, I would have done."

As she matured, Jessica has come to realised that it's important to keep some details of a relationship to herself as she does with boyfriend, Gian Luca Passi de Preposulo.

She thinks it's important not to talk about it adding that atsome point in the future if everything continues on a path, then of course it would become part of the conversation. But until it gets there, she not want to put any unexpected pressure on something that is so personal, so precious, and too delicate right at this moment in time.
