Katie Price would not be surprised if her ex-husband Alex Reid identified as transgender.

The businesswoman married the cage fighter in February 2010 but split from him in January 2011 and has admitted in the past she struggled to understand his cross-dressing, when he would act as his alter ego Roxanne.

Katie has now revealed Alex's personality would completely change when he was dressed as a woman and she wouldn't be shocked if he eventually wanted to change sex permanently.

She made the claim on 'Loose Women' while discussing Eddie Redmayne's new movie 'The Danish Girl', in which he portrays painter Lili Elbe, one of the first known recipients of sex reassignment surgery.

Katie - who is now a full-time panellist on the daytime TV show - said: "I can't wait to watch the film because I believe I've been in a similar situation. Every individual is different in how they do things. Obviously one of my husbands liked to dress as a woman. Whether he'll end up being a woman who knows? Only he would know.

"I didn't see the signs in the beginning. It was only because his friends would say, 'Oh, have you met such and such person yet?' I'd be like, 'No, are you joking?' I asked him and he'd say, 'No, I've only done it mucking about.' One night we had a drink and I said, 'Should we try to do some make-up?' just mucking about, and I opened a can of worms. A can of worms I wished I never opened. For me what I went through with him, it frightened me, his voice changed, his personality changed, the way he was changed. The things he wanted me to do frightened me. Sexually stuff was different as well, obviously I can't talk about that on daytime TV. If he does end up being a transgender it wouldn't surprise me ... Only he knows."

Katie, 37, also claimed she tried to help Alex, 40, understand why he wanted to dress as Roxanne.

She said: "I did try and get Alex help. I had to lock my dressing room up because he would use my clothes and my underwear ... I think in any case he doesn't want to stop."

When quizzed on why she couldn't accept Alex's cross-dressing, Katie said: "I obviously didn't love him enough."

Alex has previously admitted he empathises with transgender people and feels as though he has an affinity with Caitlyn Jenner - who was formerly known as Bruce Jenner before she underwent gender reassignment surgery last year.

Alex said: "Ever since I was a child I've been happy to dress up and play different characters.

"Bruce [as Caitlyn was previously known] was mocked because trans people are the last social taboo. We don't have the same rights. Wow, I just said 'we'. I guess I am. Why not be trans?"
