Lorde says being friends with Taylor Swift is like having a pal with "an autoimmune disease".

The 'Green Light' singer is very close to the 'Shake It Off' hitmaker but the 27-year-old star's global fame means they have to take great care when out socialising together.

She explained: "It's like having a friend with very specific allergies. There are certain places you can't go together. Certain things you can't do. There are these different sets of considerations within the friendship. It's like having a friend with an autoimmune disease."

As well as Taylor, Lorde also counts the likes of Florence Welch and Lena Dunham among her friends and thinks it is very reassuring to have pals in a similar position to her.

She explained to the Guardian newspaper: "It's an element of wanting to stick together. Because it can be so scary to do this. These friendships, they're about having a hand put on your shoulder by someone who knows. They're about hearing, 'I've done it, too.'"

But the New Zealand-born star also has friends who don't live their lives in the spotlight.

She said: "I have my surfer friends. My friends in the city. Girlfriends who are, like, 25, and at art school, or who work in retail, or who are overseas for a year, trying to figure out what's next. I have friends who are parents."

Throughout 2016. Lorde spent lengthy periods of time working with musician Jack Antonoff on her new album, 'Melodrama', and as she was spending a lot of time with him and his girlfriend, 'Girls' creator Lena, at their New York apartment, she began to think of them as her second parents.

She said: "I love that family. That apartment. I'd go there every day, root around in the fridge... There was definitely an element of popping down the hall and Lena being, like, 'What are you working on today?' I felt like their child."
