The 69-year-old actor - who rose to worldwide stardom by playing the iconic character in the money-spinning sci-fi franchise - has revealed he feels a responsibility to make himself available for his fans, after he received a message from a father whose nine-year-old son passed away in April 2017.

Brad Simpson wrote on Twitter: "As my son Elijah was dying of pediatric brain cancer in 2017, @HamillHimself contributed to a birthday video Lucasfilm put together where several Star Wars actors wished him happy birthday for his ninth bday (April 22). Here is Elijah watching Mark Hamill. He died the next day (sic)"

Mark spotted the post and explained why he's "visited countless patients in children’s hospitals".

He wrote on the micro-blogging platform: "One look at Elijah’s beautiful face is all you need to know about why I’ve visited countless patients in children’s hospitals over the years. Emotionally harrowing to be sure, but I consider it both a privilege & a gift I’ve been given- a responsibility I’ll never take lightly (sic)"

Meanwhile, Mark recently congratulated his ‘Star Wars’ co-star Carrie Fisher on her new star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The late actress – who passed away in 2016 – received a coveted star on the Walk of Fame as part of the 2022 honourees list, and to celebrate the occasion, Mark took to Instagram to heap praise on his former co-star.

He wrote alongside a series of snaps of himself with Carrie: “I congratulate & salute all 38 new #HollywoodWalkOfFame honorees-Welcome to the neighborhood!

“Much love & a very special 1-finger salute to the incomparable, hilarious & irreverent force of nature that was my space sis Carrie Fisher. Her star will blaze from here to eternity (sic)”
