The Duchess of Sussex paid tribute to her late mother-in-law by donning the huge aquamarine cocktail ring, which was believed to have been given to her as a wedding gift by her new husband, Prince Harry, to accessorise the high-necked Stella McCartney gown she chose for her intimate reception at Frogmore House, and its colour perfectly matched the soles of her Aquazurra shoes.

The ring - which Diana was pictured wearing to an auction of her own clothes in 1997 - was part of a set, including a matching bracelet and earrings, but it is not clear if Meghan received those too.

Following her death, a "letter of wishes" from Diana revealed she had left her jewellery collection to her sons, Harry and William - who gave his spouse, Duchess Catherine, a pair of her earrings for their own wedding in 2011 - to pass on to their "future wives".

She wrote: "I would like you to allocate all my jewellery to the share to be held by my sons, so that their wives may, in due course, have it or use it.

"I leave the exact division of the jewellery to your discretion."

When Harry proposed to Meghan last year, he did so using a ring he designed himself which featured two diamonds from Diana's personal collection.

The stones were either side of a larger diamond from Botswana, which is where the couple enjoyed a safari holiday in September.

The ring was made by Cleave and Company, Court Jewellers and Medallists to Her Majesty The Queen.
