The former 'Sabrina, The Teenage Witch' star commented as Puerto Rico faces its most powerful storm in almost 100 years, and drew ire from her Instagram followers after she complained about Hurricane Maria and the impact it had on her family holiday this month.

In a since deleted Instagram post, the actress wrote: "And just like that, our family vacation is canceled... Such a bummer but we plan to hit the @nickresortpuntacana resort another time this year."

Although many fans felt sorry for Melissa and the way her trip had gone, others suggested she could have shown more compassion for those impacted by the devastating scenes.

One follower slammed her, writing: "I think you should be more concerned with the people that live there instead of your meaningless vacation."

While others shared the sentiment, some followers were quick to defend the star and point out that being disappointed didn't rule out her being concerned for victims.

A fan argued: "Calm down people. She can be a caring person and disappointed at the same time. It's called being human."

Melissa is yet to respond to the criticism over her original controversial post, despite deleting it from her page.

However, she has since posted a tribute to those affected by the hurricane, as well as the recent earthquake in Mexico.

She wrote: "My thoughts are with all my friends in Puerto Rico and the surrounding islands that are being hit by #hurricaneMaria today."

The star has also uploaded an image of one her three sons she shares with husband Mark Wilkerson, as he prepared for "his first religious ed class".

She said: "So impressed that my little man decided to get all handsome for his first religious ed class tonight! Praying together for people suffering from natural disasters all over the world tonight!"
