The former Oasis rocker says that the coronavirus pandemic has caused havoc with the development of his son Donovan, 13, and Sonny, 10, - who he shares with wife Sara MacDonald - and says his elder boy became glued to his phone.

Noel told music newsletter The New Cue: "When the second wave hit it was f****** brutal. My kids have suffered badly.

"I've got a 13-year-old and at that age you're not really sure of who you are and you develop your character through your mates and your everyday life. When you've not got an everyday life your character is being developed by the internet.

"You can't go out and mix with your friends. All you've got is the phone, so you become addicted to it. It's such a powerful thing for young people and we kind of lost him to that for a while."

Noel – who has also daughter Anais, 21, with former wife Meg Mathews, explained that he had been planning to take a break from music when the pandemic hit.

The 54-year-old star explained: "I got back from touring with U2 first thing in December. That meant I'd done five back-to-back world tours since 2015.

"So I was planning on taking until 2023 off anyway. Obviously I wasn't planning on the f****** pandemic. So really, I'm kind of on schedule. I wasn't planning on doing anything. Like everyone, the first three months was, 'Oh this is f****** novel... this is like being on holiday."

Meanwhile, Noel recently admitted that Sonny was his favourite child because he is a "good laugh".

The High Flying Birds frontman said: "My other lad (Sonny), he’s always got his bedroom window open, no matter time of the year it is, his bedroom is f******* freezing. I’m like, ‘Mate, it’s not f***ing good for me, so why don’t you shut your bedroom door so there isn’t a draft round the house.’

“His window is open all the time and he sleeps with no f****** clothes on. The other fella sleeps with a hat on. Mad innit, how they’re both so different. But I don’t worry about that lad (Sonny), he’s my favourite at the minute, I’m having a good laugh with him at the moment."
