The 74-year-old funny man hit out at the iconic sketch show - which he was once a key cast member of - earlier this month when he branded it as "the worst humour in the world", and now currently 'SNL' star Pete has hit back, calling Chevy a "racist" and a "d****e bag".

He said: "He's a f***ing d****e bag. F**k Chevy Chase. He's just a genuinely bad, racist person and I don't like him. He's a putz."

Pete - who is currently engaged to Ariana Grande - defended the show, and said Chevy's comments were "disrespectful" to creator Lorne Michaels.

Speaking on SiriusXM's 'The Howard Stern Show', the 24-year-old comedian added: "It's disrespectful to Lorne, too, a guy who gave you a career. No matter how big you get, you can't forget what that guy did for you."

In an interview this month, Chevy claimed the hugely popular show has been going "downhill" for decades.

Asked when he last found the show - which premiered in 1975 - to be amusing, he confessed: "I'd have to say, that after the first two years, it went downhill.

"Why am I saying that? Because I was in it? I guess. That's a horrible thing to say. But certainly I never had more fun. I really loved it and enjoyed it. I didn't see the same fun thing happening to the cast the next year."

And the star revealed he feels sorry for the viewers of the show's modern-day incarnation, admitting it drives him "nuts".

After being reminded that millions of people still watch the award-winning show, he explained: "That means a whole generation of s**theads laughs at the worst f***ing humour in the world.

"You know what I mean? How could you dare give that generation worse s**t than they already have in their lives? It just drives me nuts."
