The popular BBC nature programme - which is presented and narrated by Sir David Attenborough - returned for a second series, 10 years after the first was broadcast, and left its viewers in awe with footage exploring how animals adapt to the challenges of island life.

'Harry Potter' star Emma tweeted: "I'm home and really geeking out over this - #PlanetEarth2 starts TONIGHT at 8pm on @BBCOne & 9pm on BBC Earth Nordics. Can't wait! (sic)"

Take That singer Howard - who has Grace, 17, and Lola, 11, from past relationships and 11-month-old Bowie with pregnant wife Katie Halil - urged parents to watch the show instead of 'The X Factor' and to record the programme and screen it to their children.

He posted: "Try learning something and watch #planetearth2 instead of the s**te on itv.

"Record and play to your kids, they will be transfixed! #awesome (sic)"

Busted singer Charlie found the show a "calming" way to spend the evening.

He tweeted: "Nothing better on a Sunday evening than the awesome calming tones of David Attenborough's narration! #planetearth2 (sic)"

Comic Dara O'Briain found the show "amazing" - though he admitted it's tough to watch "beautiful" animals die "tragically".

He posted: "Attenborough: Look at this beautiful animal! Us: Awwwww! Attenborough: Now watch it die, tragically, and unloved!

He later wrote: "Well, I wasn't expecting to spend my Sunday night cheering on a baby Sea-going Iguana in a race against snakes. Amazing stuff. #planetearth2 (sic)"

And the show gave presenter Rick Edwards some perspective on life.

He wrote: "a timely reminder that things could always be worse: you could be getting acid sprayed into your eyes and mouth by killer ants #planetearth2 (sic)"

Gary Lineker caught the show after the broadcast and was blown away by what he saw.

He simply posted: "Playing catchup with #planetearth2 . WOW! (sic)"

The show attracted over nine million viewers, and the series will continue for a further five episodes.
