Ralph Fiennes has used his time in lockdown to “reflect”.

The 58-year-old actor spent most of 2020 in lockdown amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and has said that whilst people used their time “differently”, he took the time to have an inward look at himself and his life.

He said: “The meaning of community, the meaning of connection between people, the meaning of what’s gone before. Everybody must be handling their lockdown and the restrictions differently but I certainly have had time to reflect. You got time to reflect on your life, what your part of the working world [is].”

Ralph is starring in the recently released movie ‘The Dig’ – which hit Netflix on Friday (29.01.21) – and hopes people will “connect” with the movie, especially as it deals with feelings of resilience amid challenging times.

He added: “I think it’s some kind of co-incidence. We didn’t know this was going to be the case when we made it, and it might be that the reaction to the film is lifted or given more positive focus because people will recognise and connect the sense of national dilemma in the film with the one we have now and the importance of things having meaning for us.

“So I think in a good way people will connect to the dig possibly more than if we didn’t have a lockdown. Because they will see the connection between our pandemic crisis and possibly the much more terrifying crisis of war.”

And whilst Ralph loved working on the drama – which reimagines the events of the 1939 excavation of Sutton Hoo – the actor confessed there was one film he was set to work on where he knew he “had to get out” before filming began.

Speaking to talkRADIO about bad film experiences, he said: “I can’t tell you what, but I was about to be part of a film and I suddenly had second thoughts and I thought ... I gotta get out of this one. I remember we hadn’t started filming. I can’t tell you but there definitely was a film where I thought YIKES! This isn’t going to be right for me. I’ve got to get out.

“My sense of being in a film is that you’re committed. I have been cold on films or I’ve been thirsty but banal things. I’ve definitely been on films where I thought this isn’t that great, I’m gonna really have a go at it … but I know it’s not going to be that great!”
