The 29-year-old actor has claimed he was unable to dash into a store and pick up some groceries for over half a decade because the success of the franchise, in which he played teenage heartthrob Edward Cullen from 2008 until 2012, meant he had people watching his every move.

Speaking to NME magazine, he said: "I had people sitting outside my house every single day, and it drove me crazy. I didn't go into a supermarket for about six years."

However, since the vampire series came to an end three years ago following five successful movies, Robert has been able to get back into the swing of normal life.

He explained: "Now I can go in [to the supermarket] and chat to the guy who's working there about his kids, or where he's going on holiday, and not be thinking, 'Is he gonna sell me out?' I just don't have to think about that stuff anymore."

Meanwhile, looking back at the beginning of his career, Robert - who is in a relationship with FKA Twigs - thinks some of the events he attended were "dumb" and "s**t."

He said: "I was watching the MTV VMAs the other day and thinking how bizarre it was that I ever did that s**t.

"I remember doing those awards and saying the dumbest stuff. And I was hungover for most of it."
