The 52-year-old victim has grown sympathetic towards the director - who pleaded guilty to unlawful sex with a minor in 1977 for plying Samantha with champagne and drugs before taking topless photos and having sex with her during a photoshoot when she was just 13 - and thinks he should now be able to put the incident behind him.

She said: "He said he did it; he pled guilty; he went to jail. I don't know what people want from him.

"I'm sure he's a nice man and I know he has a family and I think he deserves closure and to be allowed to put this behind him.

"We somehow ended up on the same side. Things have to go pretty wrong for them to end up this way."

Samantha is pleased the 82-year-old filmmaker hasn't been extradited back to the US over the case and branded Los Angeles prosecutors' pursuit of him a "travesty".

Explaining how she felt "relief" that last week a Polish judge declined to send Polanski to America, she added to NBC News: "I believe they did the right thing and made the right decision, given all the facts.

"Since I'm well aware of how long this has been going on, I'm very pleased and happy."

And she thinks prosecutors are only pursuing the case for publicity.

She added: "It's a joke. A travesty. Hollywood justice at its finest."

The 'Rosemary's Baby' filmmaker spent 42 days in jail before being released.

He then fled the country as he was afraid a judge would reject a plea deal and send him back to prison.
