The 'Praying' hitmaker got his favourite pair of red glittery stilettos that he likes to put on every now and then inked on his forearm by tattooist to the stars Dr Woo - who is known for inking the likes of Ellie Goulding, Zoe Kravitz and Cara Delevingne - at his Los Angeles studio.

Alongside a black and white photo of the piece, Sam wrote: "I love you @_dr_woo_ xx 6th woo piece now. Skipping out of your studio all bandaged up will never get old. Thank you brother x [sic]"

The 26-year-old singer previously spoke about his gender identity, saying he sees himself "just as much woman" as a man.

Sam - who is dating '13 Reasons Why' actor Brandon Flynn - opened up about cross-dressing and although he used to be mocked for it when he was younger, he revealed some people "respected" him for being so open.

The 'Too Good At Goodbyes' singer said last year: "I feel just as much woman as I am man. I got teased for it. But there were also people respecting me for walking around like that in my school.

"I just buy everything - heels, dresses. I love a heel. I've got loads of heels at home."

And the star revealed he used to wear a "full" face of make-up when he was at school, which saw him layer false eyelashes on his eyes, because he was inspired by Boy George and the singer Marilyn.

He explained: "People don't know this, but when I was 17, I remember becoming obsessed with Boy George and Marilyn, and all that. There was on moment in my life where I didn't own a piece of male clothing, really. I would wear full make-up every day in school, eyelashes, leggings with Dr Martens and huge fur coats, for two and a half years."

Sam's other tattoos include the equality sign on his wedding ring finger, the words "honesty" and "alone", two finger tattoos of the symbols for men and women - which he got at the same time - and the Roman numeral for three, a matching inking between him and his two sisters; Mabel and Lily Smith.
