Sophie Ellis-Bextor would never leave the dancefloor if one of her own songs came on.

The 'Crying at the Discotheque' singer has a "basic rule" which helps her navigate potentially-awkward public situations as she just continues with whatever she was already doing before her record started to play.

She explained to the i newspaper: “There’s a very basic rule that I’ve always adhered to in situations like that. Which is: whatever you’re doing, keep doing it.

"If I’d been sitting down, it would have been really uncool if I’d jumped up to my own song. But if I’m already on the dance floor, it’s equally absurd to suddenly storm out."

The 41-year-old singer's Kitchen Disco series were a huge hit during lockdown but she initially thought people would tune in just to "laugh" at her and her chaotic family life with husband Richard Jones and their five sons.

She said: "I was pretty sure [beforehand] that people would laugh at me, because I was there in a sequin catsuit trying not to step on children and wires everywhere...

"Richard and I felt like our household was mirroring what was happening in households around the world.

"On the one hand, we were having quite a nice time – I was with my favourite people in my own home, so life wasn’t terrible. But, like everyone else, we had that constant hum of anxiety.”

And Sophie thinks the at-home gigs have broken down any misconceptions about her.

She said: "I’ve always been the sort of person who has missing buttons and holes in my tights. Now everybody’s seen my kitchen, I don’t think they’re expecting me to be quite so well put together any more.”
