The 50-year-old actress starred as Selyse Baratheon in the hit HBO show but despite being recognised in the street, Tara admitted she is "more flattered" when people don't see her as her on-screen alter-ego because she was very plain-looking on screen.

In an interview with the Metro, Tara said: "The people of the 'Thrones'... I do find I get recognised more since playing Selyse, although with that character I'm more flattered when they don't recognise me.

"She's no great beauty!"

However, Tara is very proud to have been involved in such a revolutionary programme.

She added: "It's an extraordinary thing. It's reframed what television can do and has touched people of every age and culture, which is exceedingly rare.

"I'm lucky to have been a small part of it."

Tara starred as the wife of Stannis Baratheon - played by Stephen Dillane - from season two to season five until her character hanged herself after she and her husband agreed to burn their daughter at the stake in a sacrifice to their god.

Now, the show is in the process of filming the eighth and final season which is scheduled to air sometime in 2019, marking the first time in the show's history that there is a year break between seasons.

Recently Maisie Williams, who stars as Arya Stark in the HBO fantasy drama series, confirmed 'Game of Thrones' will return in April 2019.

The 20-year-old actress said: "We wrap in December and we air our first episode in April [2019]. That's a four-month turnaround for these huge episodes."

Despite the short four months in between the final filming day and the first episode's air date, Maisie insists the final season won't be "rushed", as the whole cast and crew are determined to deliver a finale that is done "to the best of their abilities".

Previously, HBO confirmed in a statement that fans would have to wait until 2019 - two years after the last season aired in 2017 - to watch the conclusion of the beloved saga.
