The 58-year-old actor is reportedly exploring the possibility of shooting a scene beyond Earth’s atmosphere as part of the final two instalments of the 'Mission: Impossible' franchise, and Tom is said to be willing to spend eye-watering amounts of money to achieve his ambition.

A source told The Sun newspaper: "Tom is well-known for doing his own stunts and the 'Mission' films have had some of the biggest and most elaborate movie moments ever shot.

"But he’s keen to push things further than anybody has ever done before - and, obviously, the big unknown is can you actually film in space. He’s pretty certain he can make something work and has spoken to Nasa about it, too.

"They also think it’s feasible - so things are falling into place."

Tom previously acknowledged that he's been written off multiple times during his career in the movie business.

But the Hollywood star - who plays Ethan Hunt in the 'Mission: Impossible' franchise - has insisted he doesn't allow the speculation to bother him.

He said: "All I can think about is making the movie at hand and doing the best I can and enjoying it.

"I’ve heard so many things, going back to 'Top Gun' and 'Rain Man' and 'Born on the Fourth of July' - 'He’s not going to make another movie’; 'He’s just a teen idol’; 'It’s going to destroy his career’. People are going to say whatever they’re going to say."

However, Tom claimed he's simply learned to deal with the speculation and criticism as his career has evolved.

He explained: "I’ve read it and seen it all before. That’s just the way it is. What are you going to do?"
