Back to: The greatest music producers of all time

by Jack Gander 22 December 2008

I won't fault your choice as such, given that these lists are always subjective, but I'm curious about your criteria. John Hammond, for example, is undoubtedly a pivotal figure in popular music history, and I would lead a poorer life without Billie, Aretha, Bob, Leonard and Bruce, but as a producer, while there's certainly nothing wrong with his production, I wonder what it is about his work in that sphere that warrants his inclusion. He would certainly be high up on my list of non-performing music business figures, but I wonder about the likes of Phil Spector in terms of "production" as such.
