It has been a mixed bag in terms of animation this year but there is one movie that has really stood out in this genre and that is Brave.

Brave marked the return of Pixar this summer and it was the first original story from the studio in a couple of years having focused on sequels.

And after the not so great Cars 2 Pixar have made a triumphant return with Brave as is a movie that is funny, exciting and has real heart.

The impetuous, tangle-haired Merida, though a daughter of royalty, would prefer to make her mark as a great archer.

A clash of wills with her mother compels Merida to make a reckless choice, which unleashes unintended peril on her father’s kingdom and her mother’s life.

Merida struggles with the unpredictable forces of nature, magic and a dark, ancient curse to set things right.

Brave is just as magical and emotional second time around as when I say it on the big screen for the first time as Pixar, once again, gets that perfect balance of humour, action and emotion.

It is great to see a female lead for the very first time and Merida is brave and bold and is everything tat you would expect from a heroine.

She is a character that you cannot help but like and she is also someone who we can all relate to as she wants to make her own way in the world and not be forced down a path that she doesn’t want.

This movie may have a real magic/fairytale quality to it and be about witches and spells but at it’s heart it is a simple story about the trials and tribulations of a mother and daughter.

This is a relationship that has its ups and down and is well and truly put to the test - there is something incredibly real and relatable about this element of the story.

And it is this element of the story that is the most powerful - if you do not shed a tear at the end of the film then there is something sadly wrong.

Brave seen Pixar back with a bang as this is a movie that is packed with fantastic characters; great voice performances as well as being absolutely stunning.

Pixar really have brought the Highlands of Scotland to life as the once again up the animation stakes and show why they have dominated this genre of film for so long.

Brave really is a gem of a movie and is the best animation flick to be released this year - miss this one at your peril!!
