Stalker DVD

Starring: Jane March, Anna Brecon, Bill Murray, Colin Salmon
Director: Martin Kemp
Rating: 3/5

In recent years we have seen a whole host of actors turn their hand to filmmaking and Stalker marks the directorial debut of Martin Kemp.

And for that debut Kemp has tackled the psychological thriller, a screenplay which he also penned.

Stalker tells the tale of a famous novelist struggling with writers-block (Brecon) who retreats to the country to work on her new book having been menaced by a dark figure from her past.

You wouldn’t know that Kemp has never tackled the horror movie before as this film really does have an air of menace all the way through it.

There are two great central performances from Jane March and Anna Brecon, the latter is particularly chilling.

Jane March depicts Linda as a rather fragile woman who is haunted by her past - remembering moments of trauma in her dreams.

Anna Brecon is fabulous as PA Paula who is sent to help Linda write her second novel. She has a fabulous duel personality as she switches from kind and caring to wild murderer at the flick of a switch.

This movie skips along at a great pace and the ninety minute running time means that there really isn’t a dull moment as Linda is pushed to the edge of her sanity.

There are also some great supporting performances from the likes of experienced actors such as Bill Murray and Colin Salmon.

I have to admit that I did work out the twist and while this has been used in several movie of this genre recently it does work awfully well.

Ok so Stalker doesn’t reinvent the wheel when it comes to the psychological thriller but it is very powerful movie.

Kemp shoots the majority of the film in a secluded house and it does give a very claustrophobic and trapped feel to - which all but adds to the tension.

This is a very solid directorial debut from Kemp as he has developed interesting characters as well as a very charged and exciting storyline.
