Dolphin Tale

Dolphin Tale

Director: Charles Martin Smith
Rating: 3/5

Right I will admit to you right here and now that I am a major sucker for animals in movies, I am Legend lost my interest after they unnecessarily killed the dog, and yes Dolphin Tale did draw a tear.

Based on a true story the movie follows Winter, a young dolphin who loses her tail in a crab trap and Sawyer, the introverted 11 year old boy who befriends her.

Sawyer meets the rescued dolphin at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, a marine rehabilitation centre where she lives.

Sawyer rallies friends and family alike to save Winter by convincing a pioneering doctor to create a unique prosthetic attachment to restore the dolphin’s ability to swim.

This really is a super charming movie that just warms the cockles of you heart as this sweet natured friendship forms throughout the movie.

There are some great messages in the movie from friendship and overcoming adversity to the importance of family - some really positive values for a family audience.

It also highlights the importance of looking after the environment and the dangers that out ocean’s animals face.

Winter is the star of the show but you do feel the movie relies far too heavily on this character and this story - some of the human sides of the tale are somewhat overlooked.

Ashley Judd is desperately underused and it would have been nice to see the relationship between mother and son and the impact of dad leaving them behind explored in a little more depth.

But Dolphin’s Tale is a really endearing movie that is emotional and funny and will really pull at your heartstrings.

Dolphin Tale is out on DVD & Blu-Ray
