Michael Douglas visited officials at the U.S. State Department in Washington, D.C. on Thursday (03Nov11) to urge them to press on with plansfor international nuclear disarmament.

The Wall Street star has been a longtime spokesman for arms control group Ploughshares and he took to the U.S. capital as a representative for the organisation to urge members of Congress to cut back on nuclear missiles.

He said, "The bomb was created when I was born and I'm hoping that in my lifetime we will see the elimination of nuclear weapons".

He also used his time in Washington, D.C. to discourage politicians from cutting back on foreign assistance amid budget talks.

Douglas has long been involved with government issues - he currently campaigns with the United Nations against the use of atomic weapons.
