Patrick Dempsey has put a stop to all the rumours about his future on the medical drama Grey’s Anatomy by telling Italian Vanity Fair that the eighth season of the show will be his last.

Dempsey’s career was revived when he took the role of Dr. Derek ‘McDreamy’ Shepherd in 2005, and he has remained with the show ever since. But after the eighth series, he will be leaving the show for good.

He tells Italian Vanity Fair, “I do not know what’s going to happen to the other characters, but for me it’s done.”

Starring in the show has boosted Dempsey’s career massively, with him starring in movies such as Enchanted, Made of Honor and the upcoming Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

He recently told the Los Angeles Times newspaper that he would love to play the Marvel superhero Dr. Strange in an on-screen adaptation.

He said, "There's a whole bunch of people who are into comics and Marvel, too, on the set (of Grey's Anatomy) and they're like, 'Doctor Strange, that's the one you should do.' It would be fantastic. It'd be a great TV show, especially for HBO or something like that."
