Working hard to convince bosses of the crisp manufacturer to cast the Argentine alongside Gary in an advert, the former England international admits he has a lot of "respect" for the star.

Gary - whose latest advert for the company features him with a bag of Walkers MixUps crisps - exclusively told BANG Showbiz: "They ask my opinion, and certainly on individuals involved. It is amazing the kind of famous faces I have worked with over the years in various adverts, part of the appeal is to work with people you respect.

"I am still working on them getting Messi for one."

While the 54-year-old TV presenter - who played 80 times for England - admits he is open to various hosting roles if they felt right, he prefers to focus on football because that is his main passion.

He added: "I have tried various things over the years, but you know I am quite happy doing football.

"It is a subject I really know, so it a subject that is a major part of my life and I have great interest in it.

"Football will continue to be my main focus. I would not say I will never do anything else because you never know what is in the pipeline.

"I did the London Olympics, I did the Commonwealth Games. I think the next Olympics overlaps with the football season, so I think football with take preference on that one. It is a bit early to work that one out."
