Cricket

The cricket season is up and running for England women as their three-match ODI series against the West Indies got underway last week.

And what a start it has been for the hosts as they have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead with convincing wins.

They opened the series by demolishing the Windies by 208 runs in the first ODI. Captain Heather Knight (94) and opener Amy Jones (91) laid the foundations as England posted 318 for nine in their 50 overs.

The chase never got going as the visitors were bowled out for 110 with Sophie Ecclestone and Laura Marsh each picking up three wickets.

The second match was also not much of a contest as England made 233 for seven from 41 in a rain-affected match with Tammy Beaumont top-scoring with 61.

The Windies' target was reduced to 209 in 28 overs, but they slumped to 87 for six to hand the hosts a 121-run victory via the Duckworth-Lewis method.

Meanwhile, Australia have named their squad for the upcoming Women's Ashes with young seamer Tayla Vlaeminck getting the nod despite just coming back from injury.

The 20-year-old has been struggling with a partial anterior cruciate ligament tear, but she is included along with fellow Ashes squad newcomers Nicola Carey, Delissa Kimmince, Georgia Wareham and Ashleigh Gardner.

Australia squad for Women's Ashes: Meg Lanning (capt), Rachael Haynes (vice-capt), Nicole Bolton, Nicola Carey, Ashleigh Gardner, Alyssa Healy (wk), Jess Jonassen, Delissa Kimmince, Beth Mooney, Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, Elyse Villani, Tayla Vlaeminck, Georgia Wareham.

Football

The biggest tournament in women's football is up and running in France and it has been a spectacular start to the 2019 Women's World Cup.

France and South Korea kicked it all off on Friday and the hosts ran out convincing 4-0 winners over South Korea.

Three matches followed on Saturday and two-time World Cup winners Germany edged out China 1-0.

World Cup debutants South Africa then took on Spain and the Europeans came from a goal down to win 3-1.

Norway got their campaign off to the perfect start as they beat Nigeria 3-0.

The first upset of the tournament came on Sunday when Australia went down 2-1 to Italy with the Europeans scoring in stoppage time.

Then it was the turn of Cristiane to light up the World Cup as she scored the first hat-trick of the 2019 edition to help Brazil to a comfortable 3-0 win over debutants Jamaica.

England and Scotland were left to complete the round of fixtures on the opening weekend and the former held on for a 2-1 victory.

Nikita Parris gave England the lead from the penalty spot in the 14th minute and Ellen White made it 2-0 five minutes before the break, but Scotland, playing in their first-ever World Cup match, came back strongly in the second half.

Claire Emslie scored their first goal of the tournament with 11 minutes to go, but eventually ran out of time as England edged the victory.

Golf

Lexi Thompson picked up her 11th LPGA Tour trophy on Sunday after winning ShopRite LPGA Classic at Stockton Seaview by one stroke.

The American carded a final round four-under-par 67 for a total of 12-under, with Korea's Jeong-eun Lee6, who won the US Women's Open just a week ago, finishing a shot behind.

"It was all a matter of just trusting my shots, trusting the lines," said Thompson, who finished her round with an eagle.

"The bogeys on the back nine, they weren’t bad shots or bad bogeys, so you just have to let them go."

Netball

The Vitality Netball Superleague will expand to 11 teams in 2021 with Leeds Rhinos joining the league the season after next after being granted a licence.

The self-funded Rhinos was launched in 2017 and forms part of the Leeds Rhinos group that includes the men's, women's and wheelchair rugby league teams.

"Superleague is the icing on the cake and we can't wait to play our part," director of netball Anna Carter said.

She added: "We are delighted with this news. It follows lots of hard work from a lot of people delivering our programmes and working on the application."

The team will play their matches at various venues including Leeds Beckett University, Sheffield EIS, and the First Direct Arena.

Former England netball captain Ama Agbeze, who led the team to gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia, has been named an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.

"I look back at so many times I could have walked away from netball," Agbeze told BBC Sport. "But I persisted and now have an MBE.

"It's another honour that comes with representing your country."

Rugby

England Women’s head coach Simon Middleton has named his squad for the Women’s Rugby Super Series in San Diego.

Uncapped duo Chloe Edwards (Harlequins Ladies) and Clara Nielson (Bristol Bears Women) have been included while Sarah Beckett (Firwood Waterloo Ladies) and Emily Scarratt (Loughborough Lightning) return following injury.

"I’ve been really pleased with how this new generation of Red Roses has been developing since January," said Middleton.

"We’ve been looking to continually improve our performance every time we take to the pitch, be that in training or a match, and we want to build on that as we complete our final preparations for San Diego."

And in case you missed it, here is your New Zealand Black Ferns squad.

Tennis

Ashleigh Barty is your 2019 French Open champion after she brushed aside Marketa Vondrousova in the final at Roland Garros on Saturday, winning 6-1, 6-3.

"It's remarkable," Barty said after the match. "At the moment it's a bit too much and a bit out there, really. But it's amazing. I mean, we have done the work, and we tried to put ourselves in these positions. Now that we're here, it's just incredible."

It has been rollercoaster ride for the Australian the past few years as in 2014 she took a break from tennis and took up cricket.

She then found herself competing in the inaugural Women's Big Bash League in 2015-16 for the Brisbane Heat.

But she returned to tennis in 2016 and was ranked outside the world top 600, but just over three years later she is a career-best No 2 in the world rankings.

Meanwhile, it wasn't to be for Johanna Konta as the British No 1 came up short in her semi-final against Vondrousova, going down 7-5, 7-6 (7-2).

However, the 28-year-old was not too downbeat afterwards.

"There is nothing for me to be disappointed in or upset about," she said. "I mean, I lost a tennis match, but I also won five. I can only take the good things from that."
