Most Christmas parties take place this weekend, with some weekday ones being held a few days earlier. You may have already had yours, or it may be coming up very soon. Either way, these events can be very disruptive to your sleep.

How's your sleeping pattern this week?

How's your sleeping pattern this week?

Some new research from Bensons for Beds has found that employees have the worst night’s sleep of the entire year on the night of their work’s Christmas party. Almost two thirds of us say that we get less than five hours sleep when we celebrate with our colleagues.

And of course, it’s not just the lack of a decent sleep on the night that becomes a problem. The next day is generally spent tired, hungover and unproductive – this is particularly a problem for those of us who work the following day.

80% of employees who went to work the next day said that they were five times less productive than usual and spent most of the day wishing they were back in bed.

Sleep deprivation can have a huge impact on productivity levels, causing you to lose attention quickly, feel unfocused, and anxious the next day.

So if you haven’t had your Christmas party yet and you’re wondering how you can prevent the festive flop from lack of sleep, there are a few things you can do to help yourself.

If you tend to stay out late, try to halt the sugary foods and drinks a few hours before going to bed. This will give you body a chance to burn them off, meaning you can enjoy a good night sleeps a lot easier.

Try set yourself a curfew too. Having 6-8 hours sleep is necessary to function properly the next day, so if you must be up at a certain time in the morning, aim to give yourself plenty of resting time before.

If you’re tired, you’re more likely to crave carbohydrates and fatty foods. Although they provide a quick energy boost, they also result in a quick crash shortly after. Instead of giving in to these cravings, try a vegetable-based brother for vitamins and minerals. Foods that are high in healthy fats are also great for energy – try avocado and nuts.

Once you feel you have recovered from the Christmas party, make sure you get a solid eight hours of sleep. Having a comfortable mattress increases the quality of sleep too!
