In our weekly feature on the ins and outs in women's sport, we look at England’s Women's Six Nations heroics and Bianca Andreescu's fairytale run in Indian Wells.

England Women have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead their limited-overs series against Sri Lanka.

They kicked off their campaign with 154-run win via the Duckworth Lewis method in the opening ODI.

After being asked to bat first, England posted 331 for seven with Natalie Sciver's 73-ball 93 and 79 from opener Amy Jones setting them on the way to an excellent score.

Sri Lanka's target was reduced to 314 in 40 overs and they could only muster 159 for eight with all-rounder Oshadi Ranasinghe's unbeaten 51 the best of a disappointing batting display. Katherine Brunt was the pick of the bowlers with three for 24.

England then followed it up with a six-wicket win in the second ODI.

After opting to bat first, Sri Lanka were restricted to 187 for nine with Harshitha Madavi top scoring with 42 and Alex Hartley the pick of the bowlers with three for 36.

Amy Jones then smashed 54 from 39 balls to power her side to victory in 33.3 overs.

Bad news for the $1.5million Bank of Hope Founders Cup in Phoenix as Michelle Wie and Lexi Thompson won't feature.

Wie's return to action from wrist surgery was cut short after she was forced to pull out the HSBC Women’s World Championship in Singapore after just 14 holes.

She remains on the sidelines and won't take part in the March 21-24 Bank of Hope Founders Cup event.

Thompson, meanwhile, will for the fourth time in five years skip the event altogether, according to Golfweek.com as she will continue her preparations for the ANA Inspiration at home.

Football

It was another record-breaking day for women's football on Sunday as a world-record crowd for a women's club football match attended the Liga Femenina match between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona at the Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid, Spain.

A crowd of 60,739 watched as Barca beat their hosts 2-0 through goals from Nigeria forward Asisat Oshoala and England attacker Toni Duggan. The record comfortably beat the previous mark of 48,121, which was set in January this year when Atletico played Athletic Bilbao at San Mames.

Over in England it was Women's FA Cup quarter-final weekend and defending champions Chelsea, Manchester City, Reading and West Ham United booked their places in the last four.

Holders Chelsea edged Championship outfit Durham 1-0 with Ji So-yun scoring the match winner.

Man City were comfortable 3-0 winners over Liverpool as a brace from Georgia Stanway and one from Janine Beckie helped City to victory over the Reds.

Reading needed extra time to see off Manchester United, winning 3-2 after 120 minutes of football.

It was goalless after 90 minutes, but a penalty from Alex Greenwood put United in the lead only for Remi Allen to equalise.

Man United again found themselves in front early in the second period of extra time as Natasha Harding scored an own goal, but Reading again found a way back as Rachel Furness drew level.

Just as penalties were approaching, Rakel Honnudottir pounced on a loose ball following a free-kick to give Reading a late win.

West Ham, meanwhile, beat Aston Villa 1-0 with Jane Ross scoring the only goal of the game.

And this is what the semi-final looks like:

  • Manchester City v Chelsea
  • Reading v West Ham

What a weekend of Women's Six Nations!

England are the Grand Slam champions after they annihilated Scotland 80-0 in their final match in front of a record crowd for women at Twickenham. Yep, 80-0 with 13,278 spectators watching.

The hosts scored 12 (12!) tries as Jess Breach and Poppy Cleall touched down twice. Sarah Beckett, Natasha Hunt, Kelly Smith, Amy Cokayne, Sarah Bern, Sarah Hunter, Emily Scarratt and Cath O'Donnell also crossed the whitewash for England.

So well done England, but perhaps the result of the weekend came at Stadio Plebiscito in Padua where Italy claimed their biggest-ever win over defending champions France.

The Azzurre needed a bonus-point win over France to finish second behind England, and that's exactly what they did as they scored four tries en route to a 31-12 victory.

Sofia Stefan, Melissa Bettoni, Beatrice Rigoni and Manuela Furlan all touched down for Italy, but it was captain Furlan's try four minutes from full time that was the cherry on the cake.

Caroline Boujard and Ian Jason replied for Les Bleues.

In the third match of the weekend, Wales condemned Ireland to their fourth defeat of the tournament with a 24–5 win at the Millennium Stadium.

Jess Kavanagh, Carys Phillips, Beth Lewis and Jasmine Joyce crossed the line for Wales while Ireland's sole score came from Beibhinn Parsons.

We can't wait for the 2020 edition.

Take a bow Bianca Andreescu!

The 18-year-old became the first wildcard winner of the BNP Paribas Open when she beat three-time Grand Slam winner Angelique Kerber in the final in Indian Wells.

Andreescu, saw off the likes of Garbine Muguruza and Elina Svitolina on her way to the showpiece match, and in the final she dispatched her more experienced opponent 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

"It's been a crazy ride. Truly a Cinderella story. Naomi did this last year. And now to be able to have my name in front of so many amazing champions - it means the world to me," The Canadian said after her win.

"It's definitely inspiration seeing her claim the trophy here last year, and winning two Grand Slams right after that has been amazing to see."
