Athletics

Brigid Kosgei is the new women's marathon world-record holder after she smashed Paula Radcliffe's 16-year-old mark by 81 seconds at the Chicago Marathon on Sunday.

The 25-year-old Kenyan completed the race in 2:14.04 to easily better Radcliffe's time of 2:15:25, which was set at the 2003 London Marathon.

"I think 2:10 is possible for a lady," Kosgei said. "I am focused on reducing my time again."

She added: "I'm happy and I feel good. I ran here last year so I knew it was a good course. There was a little bit of wind but it was okay. People were cheering all along the course, which gave me more energy."

The Ethiopian pair of Ababel Yeshaneh (2:20:51) and Gelete Burka (2:20:55) completed the podium.

Cricket

Australia have followed up their T20 whitewash over Sri Lanka with a clean sweep in the three-match ODI series.

Australia's chase was once again led by the impressive Alyssa Healey as the opener hit a 76-ball 112 to steer the hosts to victory.

India's bowlers then took charge as they bowled South Africa out for 140 with spinner Ekta Bisht doing the damage with 3 for 32.

Cycling

Laura Kenny has set her sights on triple gold at the European Championships in the Netherlands as she has signed up for the team pursuit, the omnium and the madison.

"I'd like to say that I can do all three events, but I guess in a week's time I will actually know," she said.

"I've been there before - I've doubled up at both the Olympics that I've been to, so for me, taking on a third event doesn't really seem that strange.

"When you're just racing the team pursuit you can focus on that, but when you throw in the bunch races, there's the tactical side of things and the possibility of crashing, which can obviously affect the races to come.

"But at the moment I'm going into it thinking and hoping that I will be good enough come Tokyo to do all three, so we'll have to see what happens."

Football

After the international break last week, it was back to the Women’s Super League the last few days in England and the match of the weekend was between London giants Chelsea and Arsenal at Kingsmeadow.

And it was Chelsea who produced a brilliant come-from-behind win against the defending champions Arsenal as they won the derby 2-1.

Danielle van de Donk gave the Gunners the lead as early as the ninth minute, but Beth England (57) and Maria Thorisdottir (85) ensured the hosts picked up three points.

Manchester City kept their 100% record as they beat Birmingham City 3-0 through goals from Keira Walsh, Tessa Wullaert and Lee Geum-min.

City's neighbour's Manchester United produced arguably their performance of the season as they won 3-0 away at Tottenham Hotspur with Kirsty Hanson and Jane Ross scoring goals while the third was an Ashleigh Neville own goal.

In other results, Reading beat Everton 3-2, West Ham United secured a 3-1 win away against Brighton while Liverpool and Brighton drew 1-1.

This weekend's results mean City stay top with 12 points, two ahead of Chelsea with Arsenal dropping to third with nine points.

Golf

South Korean Jeongeun Lee6 has been named Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year.

The 23-year-old is the 13th Korean to claim the honour and her biggest success as a golfer to date came at the US Women's Open this year when she won the event by two shots.

"For five consecutive years, Korean golfers have won this Rookie of the Year award. I’m part of that list, and I am so proud and honoured," Lee6 said.

"This is all thanks to those players who came before me, who have all given me so much advice. Since the season is almost over, I want to finish strong for the rest of our tournaments and perform well."

And in case you missed it, the Ladies European Tour (LET) will finish the 2019 season in Africa after signing a deal to play the final event, in Kenya.

The Magical Kenya Ladies Open will take place from December 5-8 at the Baobab Course at Vipingo Ridge, Kilifi County.

Netball

The Loughborough Lightning are the British Fast5 Netball All-Stars Championship winners after beating Wasps Netball 61-35 in the final at the Copper Box Arena.

England shooter Jo Harten was the star of the show as she contributed 58 of her team's 61 points.

"That was so much fun," Harten. "I don't ever play with a smile on my face but this group of girls have been electric this whole day. The crowd have been electric too, what an atmosphere.

"I'm 30-years-old now and I feel so rejuvenated. We've got young players, 18/19-years-old working so hard to get us the ball and it's been absolutely team effort. It's been a privileged to pull on the Loughborough purple again."

Tennis

She is only 15 years old, but Coco Gauff can call herself a WTA Tour singles trophy winner after she won the Upper Austria Ladies Linz title on Sunday.

She is the first 15-year-old since Czech Nicole Vaidisova in 2004 to win a WTA Tour title.

The American teenager overcame a second-set slump to beat former Roland Garros champion Jelana Ostapenko 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 in the final.

"I’m still overwhelmed and shocked," Gauff said after the match. "I guess it’s crazy to say it’s my first WTA title. This was definitely not on the calendar at the beginning of the year, because I didn’t think I’d have a chance to get in, and now I’m the champion, so it’s crazy."

It was quite the week for Gauff as she only got a spot in the main draw as a lucky loser and seven days later she held aloft the trophy.

"It’s just literally insane that I got in as a lucky loser and now I’m the champion," she said.

"My dad told me when I got in, before the first main-draw match, he said ‘You can’t lose twice in the same tournament!. I’m sure he never thought it would come this far, to being the champion, but I guess he was right!"

Over in Tianjin, Rebecca Peterson beat Heather Watson 6-4, 6-4 to win her second WTA Tour title.

The Swede won her maiden title only a few weeks ago at the Jiangxi Open.

"I think the challenge of this week was just to keep going and try to play my game in every match," Peterson said. "I think I had some really tough matches, like yesterday, the day before, even in my first round.

"All my matches here have been tough, and I had to really push myself to go through. Even though today we played indoor, I know she’s tough when playing on fast surfaces. So I’m happen with my performance today."

It was still a great week for Watson as she reached her first final since March 2016.
