In our weekly feature on the ins and outs in women's sport, Dina Asher-Smith and Katarina Johnson-Thompson strike gold at the World Championships in Doha.

Athletics

Take a bow Dina Asher-Smith!

The 23-year-old has become the first British athlete to win three medals at a major athletics championship.

Her glorious run started when she won silver in the women's 100m behind Jamaica superstar Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce with her time of 10.83 seconds a new national record.

And she then went one better in the 200m as she became the first British female to win gold in a sprint event, powering home in 21.88  seconds.

"Everyone said 'you are the favourite', but you still have to go and do it and you have to perform. I was focused on that," she said.

"I have dreamt of this and now it’s real. I am getting all emotional, this means a lot, I am really happy."

The icing on the cake came when the 4x100m women’s relay team won silver.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson also won gold as she set a new British record of 6,981 points in the women's heptathlon.

"Everyone’s got their journey," she said. "It’s not been very straightforward for me. It’s not been easy for me. I had to move coach. I had to move country, I had to learn a new language and settle in. I tore everything up and started again and it’s worked.

“The last two world championships have been heartbreaking for my mum and I. Mid-heptathlon, I’ve gone back to my hotel and cried and cried for hours when things have gone badly. It was after the high jump in London in 2017 and after the long jump in 2015 in Beijing. Those were the low points of my career. Rio Olympics, as well. I’ve had a lot of bad years. I’m just so happy that I came out in front for a change."

Cricket

After winning the Twenty20 International series 3-0, Australia have taken a 2-0 lead in their three-match ODI campaign after two more convincing displays against Sri Lanka.

They won the opening ODI by 157 runs as they posted 281 for eight on the back of Meg Lanning's 73 and Beth Mooney's 66 before the visitors were dismissed for 124 as the bowling unit shared the wickets.

The second ODI had a similar theme as the hosts posted 282 for eight with opener Rachel Haynes laying the foundations with 118 and Alyssa Healy chipping in with 69.

Sri Lanka were then restricted to 172 for nine with Jess Jonassen doing the damage with four for 31.

Over in India, the hosts beat South Africa 3-1 in their T20 series with two matches abandoned.

India already had an unassailable 3-0 lead before the visitors finally got a win under their belt as they secured a 105-run victory in the final match.

Lizelle Lee (84 from 47 balls) and Sune Luus (62 from 56 balls) gave South Africa a competitive score of 175 for three and India didn't come close to the target as they were dismissed for 70 with Nadine de Klerk taking three for 18.

Football

England suffered a fourth defeat in five matches as they went down 2-1 against Brazil in a friendly in front of 29,238 fans at the Riverside Stadium.

Debinha scored twice for Brazil in the second half before substitute Beth England gave the hosts hope with a goal in the 80th minute, but it wasn't to be for Phil Neville's team.

"They didn’t deserve to lose that’s for sure," Neville said.

"We got punished for two lapses in concentration when the game should have been dead and buried.

"Things probably aren’t going for us the way they were 12 months ago, but that’s football.

"What I would say is I can look my players in the eye, and they can look each other in the eye and say they played a really good game of football."

Next up for England are Portugal away on Tuesday while they will also face Germany at Wembley on November 9 with a record 75,000 tickets already sold.

Over in the United States, Jill Ellis bowed out as head coach of the United States Women's National Team on the back of a 1-1 draw with South Korea in Chicago.

The US World Cup victory tour was Ellis' last in charge and Ji Soyun gave South Korea the lead in the 34th minute, but the hosts were level three minutes later thanks to Carli Lloyd.

Ellis led the USWNT to World Cup glory in 2015 and 2019 and her team won 106 of 132 games she was in charge.

Golf

It was a weekend to remember for Cheyenne Knight as the American won her first LPGA Tour trophy following a two-shot victory at the Volunteers of America Classic in Texas.

The 22-year-old carded a final round five-under 66 to finish on 18-under 266 with Brittany Altomare and Jaye Marie Green tied for second.

"It's so incredible. I can't put it into words," Knight said.

She added: "I said when I got my card this was the event I was most looking forward to. Who would have thought this would help me secure my card. I thought I was going back to Q-school. To win this means everything, knowing I can persevere.

There was also a first-time winner on the Ladies European Tour as Christine Wolf won the Hero Women's Indian Open.

The Austrian carded a three-under-par 69 to finish on 11-under with Norway's Marianne Skarpnord three shots behind in second place.

"I’m very relieved. I was looking forward to coming back here," Wolf said. "I didn’t think, in my wildest dreams, that I would actually pull through and I’m just excited right now. I just tried to stay calm and enjoy it out here and hit good shots."

Netball

The annual British Fast5 All-Stars Championships is set for this coming weekend and Saracens Mavericks have snapped up former England Roses captain Ama Agbeze as well as Jhaniele Fowler for the tournament.

The duo will play alongside Sasha Corbin, Kadeen Corbin, Georgia Lees, Jo Trip, Beth Ecuyer Dale, Paige McCalla, Steph Collard and Chloe Essam.

England shooter Jo Harten will once again play for the Loughborough Lightning following eight years in Australia and New Zealand.

"Loughborough is my second home for netball and I can't wait to pull on the dress again," Harten said.

Meanwhile, former Australian Diamonds shooter Karyn Bailey has joined Surrey Storm for the 2020 Superleague season while she was also compete in the Fast5s.

"Surrey Storm offers me an opportunity to be a part of a team that is building for the future," Bailey told the official Superleague website. "Mikki was quite frank about her ambitions for the team, and her desire to reach the top 4 next year – and the overall vision as to how we would strive for that – was refreshing to hear for a seasoned player like myself. It is an exciting prospect and something I look forward to being a part of."

Team Bath have snapped up South African star Khanyisa Chawane.

"I am really thrilled to have signed with Team Bath, it’s absolutely amazing to know I’m going to be part of one of the best teams in the UK," Chawane said.

Tennis

From going nearly eight months without a trophy to winning two trophies in the space of two weeks. Naomi Osaka seems to have found her groove again with the two-time Grand Slam winner following up the Japan Open title a fortnight ago with the China Open title on Sunday.

The 21-year-old beat world No 1 Ashleigh Barty 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in just under two hours to win the Beijing trophy.

Osaka, though, admits her attitude during the match was "really trash".

"Basically I was telling myself to keep fighting even though my attitude was really trash. This is a final, I’m really privileged to be here in the first place, so keep fighting," she said.

"I feel like I wasn’t that calm here. I threw my racket, like, once every match. I really wanted to win here. I felt like I had something to prove."
