In our weekly feature on the ins and outs in women's sport, England Women reach a new high in the FIFA rankings while their cricket counterparts finish their Sri Lanka tour on a high.

Cricket

England followed up their clean sweep of Sri Lanka in the one-day International series with a whitewash in the Twenty20 series and, to be honest, they were a level above their hosts throughout the trip to the Indian Ocean island.

They followed up their eight-wicket win in the first T20 with an eight-wicket victory in the second match and a 96-run win in the final game.

The bowlers set the tone once more in the second T20 as they restricted Sri Lanka to 108 for six in their 20 overs with Katherine Brunt claiming two wickets for 31, but the rest of the attack gave little away in terms of runs.

Openers Danielle Wyatt (37) and Amy Jones (36) then shared a 79-run opening stand as the visitors eased to their target in 13.5 overs.

Wyatt and Jones carried that form over to the third T20 as they both notched up half-centuries as England posted 204 for two in their 20 overs.

Sri Lanka only managed 108 for six in their reply with Kate Cross snaring two for 20.

England's next assignment is the visiting West Indies before they tackle Australia in the Women’s Ashes on English soil in July.

Football

On the international football front, England have moved up to a best-ever third place in the final FIFA Women's Rankings before the World Cup.

The Lionesses moved ahead of World Cup hosts France, who are now fourth, on the back of their #SheBelieves Cup success, with only the United States and Germany ahead of them.

In club action, Chelsea are in the semi-finals of the Women's UEFA Champions League after a dramatic last-gasp 3-2 aggregate win over Paris Saint-Germain.

After winning the first leg 2-0 at home, the Blues found themselves struggling in the second leg as PSG drew the tie level through Kadidiatou Diani and an own goal from Chelsea goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger.

But just as the tie looked set for extra time, Karen Carney's cross found Maren Mjelde and the Norwegian international made no mistake to secure the win on aggregate.

Next up for Emma Hayes' side are holders Lyon after the French outfit demolished last year's runners-up Wolfsburg 6-3 on aggregate following 2-4 win in the second leg.

The other semi-final will see Bayern Munich and Barcelona go head-to-head.

German outfit Bayern beat Slavia Praha 5-1 in the second leg to claim a 6-2 aggregate win while Barca followed up their 4-0 home win over LSK Kvinner with a 1-0 away victory with Lieke Martins scoring the only goal of the game.

In the Women's Super League, there is no change at the top as Arsenal and Manchester City both claimed late victories.

Leaders Arsenal claimed a narrow 1-0 win over Birmingham City thanks to a 79th minute goal from Katie McCabe with the win keeping them one point clear of City.

There was late drama in the City-Liverpool clash as the hosts scored in the 95th minute to secure all three points and keep the pressure on the Gunners.

City took the first-half lead through a Claire Emslie goal, but Liverpool drew level in the 53rd minute thanks to a Courtney Sweetman-Kirk penalty.

However, Jennifer Beattie scored in the fifth minute of injury time to secure the win.

In other results, Champions League semi-finalists Chelsea drew 1-1 with West Ham, Yeovil Town beat Everton 1-0 away from home and Reading were 1-0 winners away to Bristol City.

Golf

The LPGA Tour returned to Carlsbad, California, last week and Nasa Hataoka picked up her third title after winning the Kia Classic by three strokes.

The 20-year-old Japanese player carded a five-under-par 67 in the final round to finish at 18-under for the tournament and walk away with the winner's cheque of $270,000.

"The first couple days I wasn't putting very well, so I didn't really think I could pull this off," Hataoka said.

"Until the 18th hole, anything could happen - but I was just very relieved that my second shot landed on the putting surface."

Inbee Park,  Sung Hyun Park, Jin Young Ko, Azahara Munoz and Danielle Kang all finished on 15-under.

Tennis

What a couple of weeks it has been for Ashleigh Barty as the Australian claimed the biggest title of her career by winning the Miami Open.

Barty beat top 10 stars Petra Kvitova and Kiki Bertens en route to the final where world No 7 Karolina Pliskova stood between her and a maiden WTA Tour Premier Mandatory.

The 22-year-old beat the Czech 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 to win not only the title and climb to a career-high of No 9 in the world rankings.

The WTA action moves to Charleston and Monterrey this week for the Volvo Car Open and Abierto GNP Seguros, respectively.
