Today, we give you the lowdown on the Women's Big Bash League semi-finals, the Laureus World Sports Awards nominees, the season-opening LPGA event and more.

Cricket

It's 58 down, one more to go in the Women's Big Bash League in Australia with the Sydney Sixers and Brisbane Heat to contest final on January 26.

And both teams booked their places in the showpiece match in dramatic fashion as the defending champions the Sixers got there via a super over while the Brisbane outfit won a final-ball thriller.

The Heat were up against the Sydney Thunder and posted 140 for seven with Sammy-Jo Jonassen leading the way with 33 while New Zealand wicketkeeper Rachel Priest set the foundation for the Thunder's reply with an excellent 44 from 33 balls.

Needing a boundary off the last ball - four to force a super over or six to win the match - Nicola Carey went for it and it looked like she would clear the rope only for Haidee Birkett to take a stunning catch on the square-leg boundary to earn the Heat the win by four runs.

Not be outdone by the dramatics, the Sixers made 131 for four in their 20 overs with captain Ellyse Perry (54 not out) and South African all-rounder Dane van Niekerk (51) making sure their bowlers had something to defend.

Sophie Molineux anchored the reply for the Melbourne Renegades with 55 from 44, but the real excitement started at the end of their innings.

Needing three from the last ball, Molineux hit the ball through the point region and it looked like it was going for four until boundary Erin Burns pulled off a great save. Molineux, though, tried to come back for a third run to win the match, but was run-out and it went to a super over.

The Renegades could only manage six in the one-over eliminator and then Perry carried her side home when she smashed a six off the fourth ball.

Football

It was an international weekend in the world of women's football and it wasn't a good weekend for reigning World Cup champions the United States as they went down 3-1 against France.

Kadidiatou Diani scored a brace for the 2019 World Cup hosts while Marie-Antoinette Katoto made it 3-0 at Stade Oceane in Le Havre. Mallory Pugh pulled one back in stoppage time for the visitors, but it was still a disappointing result for the Jill Ellis’s side.

Next up for the United States are Spain on Tuesday.

Scotland, meanwhile, went down 2-1 against Iceland in La Manga.

Elin Metta Jensan scored a brace for Iceland while Lana Clelland got a consolation goal for Shelley Kerr's outfit.

"We were always coming here to experiment, playing three different formations as well," Kerr said.

"We've learnt a lot and the past two games have answered some of the questions we've asked of the squad.

"I thought we dominated the first half without creating too many chances but they started the second half better than us and had more energy. The first goal put them on the front foot and we didn't really recover.

"I don't think they're a better team than us but we experimented over the two games, starting 20 different players which is a huge positive as you wouldn't normally get the chance to do that."

Golf

Eun-Hee Ji kicked off her 2019 campaign in style as she won the LPGA Tour season-opening Diamond Resorts Tournament of Champions.

The South Korean carded a final-round one-under-par 70 in testy windy conditions at the Tranquilo Golf Course to finish at 14-under 270, two strokes clear of Mirim Lee, with Nelly Korda another two strokes back in third.

"It was a little bit chilly for me today. My body was a little bit tight on first tee, so I just pulled a little bit, and I made a bogey," she said.

"I made a bogey again second hole. I was like, `OK, wait a minute. I need to play this.' But I have like 16 more holes, and I just trust my swing after that."

World No 1 Ariya Jutanugar finished with a final round of 75 to tie for 18th.

Laureus World Sports Awards

The nominees for the 2019 Laureus World Sports Awards have been revealed with American gymnast Simone Biles and Winter Olympic champions Ester Ledecka and Mikaela Shiffrin leading the way in the World Sportswoman of the Year Award category.

Tennis duo Simona Halep and Angelique Kerber are also in the running for the prize along with four-time Ironman world champion Daniela Ryf.

US Open champion Naomi Osaka, Spanish motor cycling champion Ana Carrasco, Italian skier Sofia Goggia and Jamaican sprinter Briana Williams are up for the Breakthrough of the Year Award.

Meanwhile, Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat and American skier Lindsey Vonn have been nominated for the Comeback of the Year gong.

Netball

Australia have been crowned 2019 International Quad Series champions after a dramatic finish to the tournament.

South Africa upset hosts England 48-45 on Saturday while Australia held off a fighting New Zealand 53-50. It meant England had to beat Australia by five goals on Sunday to win the title.

Tracey Neville's charges got the win, but they were short of the five-goal winning margin as they won 52-49.

Focus can now switch to the World Cup later this year and captain Serena Guthrie believes they have taken a big step forward.

"We can take a lot of confidence going forward to the World Cup and, in hindsight, this is probably the best possible preparation we can have for July because we had ups and downs, we had to fight and keep a lead," she said. "All those things win you a gold medal.

"As much as we didn’t win the Quad Series we’ve never beaten Australia in this tournament. We haven’t got the golden egg but we have made a big step forward.

"We’re not perfect yet but we’re definitely building."

In the final game of the tournament, New Zealand beat South Africa in extra time.

With the Silver Ferns down 45-44, Ameliaranne Ekenasio scored with five seconds left in regulation time to take it to additional time.

It remained tight during the two additional periods of seven minutes with neither team able to create a two-goal margin that was needed.

And so it went to an additional six minutes before Maria Folau finally scored to give New Zealand a 62-60 win.

Tennis

We have reached the business end of the Australian Open and Serena Williams is still very much alive after she came through a three-set test against world No 1 Simona Halep.

The 23-time Grand Slam winner reached the quarter-final with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 victory over the reigning French Open champion, and up next is Karolina Pliskova, who beat Garbine Muguruza.

US Open champion Naomi Osaka will take on Elina Svitolina in the other quarter-final.
