Today is National Humbug Day so we have found a recipe if you want a bash at making some yourself!

Ingredients for 375g

Oil for greasing

350g/ 12oz Sugar

5 tablespoons of liquid glucose

250ml/ 8floz water

½ teaspoon cream of tartar

½ teaspoon of oil of peppermint

Few drops of green food colouring

You will need: A sugar thermometer

Put the sugar and glucose in a saucepan, add the water and heat gently.

Stir until all the sugar has dissolved.

Add the cream of tartar and bring to the boil.

Measure the temperature with a sugar thermometer until it is at 140 degrees C.

Take the pan off the heat and add peppermint oil.

Divide the mixture into two portions and add the green colouring to one portion.

Oil a tin and pour the mixture onto two separate tins.

Let the mixture cool.

Using oiled scissors cut the hardened mixture into 1cm pieces.

When they are cold and hard wrap them in waxed paper.

Store in an airtight tin.
