But I NEED this app!

But I NEED this app!

As we are becoming more and more media savvy, boasting the latest laptops and up-to-date phones, we have become obsessed with having the must-have apps on our phones, but new reports show that we are wasting 5.8m a year on ‘one-hit wonder’ apps.

According to new research from Tesco Mobile, a growing number of ‘one-hit wonder’ apps are cluttering up our mobiles, with the increase off apps on the rise, we are constantly updating our phones to ensure that we have the latest app that everyone is talking about.

The apps that are proving popular as a ‘one-hit-wonder’ app are weight loss and exercise guides, recipe cheat books and language learners. Tesco Mobile found that the average British smartphone has 23 apps installed on it, with less than a third of them being used on a regular basis.

Although our phones are full to the brim will apps that we have never even spent more than 5 minutes on, 10% of us only delete unused apps on a weekly basis and 15% admitted that they have never deleted an app from their handset.

Tesco Mobile’s research has revealed that fitness apps rank as the most neglected when it comes to apps downloaded, but we do start off with the best intentions to use them on a daily basis, but once we have the app installed, they are rarely opened.

Tesco Mobile compiled a list of the top 5 ‘one-hit wonder’ apps that we Brits rarely use:

Fitness apps:  With our summer holidays edging nearer we want to ensure that our bodies are in tip top shape, but the results from Tesco Mobile’s study show that 16% of Brits have never used their fitness app more than once.

Cooking apps: With cooking programmes proving popular on our television screens we suddenly get the urge to try out all the different recipes that we see, but 16% fail to use their cooking app more than once.

Language/learning apps: We are a nation of hopefuls who want to learn new languages to make it that little bit easier when ordering a beer on your sunny holiday in Spain, but 14% of us have never opened these apps more than once.

Book apps: Since we have other devices that can allow us to read on-the-go, 13% admit to never actually reading the books on our phones.

Travel/museum apps: Let’s face it, it’ll be easier than carrying all the leaflets and offers around with you and but 10% of users have never looked at these apps more than once

Chief Marketing Officer of Tesco Mobile, Simon Groves, said: “With so many apps readily available, it’s tempting to get app happy and download those that seem like a good idea at the time but are never likely to get used.”

He added: “A bit of savvy app shopping, making the most of top notch free apps and giving your phone a bit of a clear out will make space for what you do need  and save you money all at the same time.”

As well as having our phones stocked up with all the latest apps, Brits have also admitted that they don’t know who’s who in their phonebook. Tesco Mobile found that the average phone has 66 phone numbers in its contact list, but we have absolutely no recollection of who the 10% of those contacts are. We also can’t delete any old texts or very old photographs and we are determined to hold onto the memories. Only 10% of phone users regularly back up and clear their pictures to make more room on their handset and 1 in 10 Brits never clear out their old text messages.
