Games such as 'Overwatch' and 'Star Wars: Battlefront II' could be classed as gambling in Belgium.

The two titles are a number of new releases which feature loot boxes, and due to their random nature, there has been debate as to whether they should be seen as a form of gambling.

While North America's ESRB and overseas counterparts Ukie and PEGI have ruled they don't believe purchasing loot boxes are gambling, the Belgian Gaming Commission are conducting their own investigations.

According to VTM News, Gaming Commission director Peter Naessens believes loot boxes are "dependent on chance" and the random nature of the mystery purchases need further investigations.

If the games are classified as gambling, it could cost developers "hundreds of thousands of euros" and the titles could even end up taken off shelves, while a potential ruling could have repercussions in other countries.

Though the loot boxes are optional purchases for gamers, it was recently revealed playing 'Star Wars: Battlefront II' would require years of playing and thousands of dollars in order to unlock everything needed to progress.
