Any gamer worth their salt has at least heard of the infamous Dark Souls series. Now, the 2011 original title is back with a glossy new look, adding yet another layer of brilliance to the addictive and unforgiveable gameplay that hooked millions of players the first time round. With all DLC included in the base product, this is the definitive version of Dark Souls for any player, whether they’re returning for a nostalgic experience, or are jumping into the story for the first time.

The defining trait of Dark Souls is the precision a player has to have to make their way through the game. Combat here is perhaps the toughest to learn in any video game EVER, but it’s that challenge which feels so refreshing after a plethora of button mashing titles that anybody can pick up in a matter of minutes. Having a real challenge is a brilliant experience, and with the increase in framerate from 30fps to 60fps, the battles feel fairer than ever before. You will die of course, but you won’t be quite as salty as you might have been back in 2011.

Landscapes are more beautiful than they have ever been. It’s a strange way to describe the dark and miserable depths that you often find yourself thrown into, but there is such an intricacy in detail here that you’ll be left open-mouthed. Just make sure to dodge the arrows coming your way whilst you take it all in.

For those who feel the challenge is just too much, there is the ability to summon other players from around the globe via the online system. Finding their signs on the ground means they can be brought in to help you through particularly tricky showdowns, but once they’ve helped out they will disappear, unlikely to be seen again.

Not everybody online is quite as nice, though. Invasions will have you clinging to the walls to ensure you cannot be crept up on by a sneaky fellow gamer. There may even be a gang attack which will leave you forced to choose between standing your ground, or making a run for it. The tension and suspense layered throughout this game is unlike any other, and that’s something to be celebrated.

Though there are zero changes made to gameplay, which could be disappointing for some who were hoping for even a slight difference when it comes to playing through the title, Dark Souls Remastered is very much a must-purchase for anybody willing to put in the time and effort.

There could be an argument made that there’s another level the game could have gone to graphically, but what developers have done here is retain the charm and magic of the original whilst turning it into something much more outstanding.

Dark Souls Remastered is available now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, with the title also set for release on Nintendo Switch in the near future. A copy of the game was provided to Female First on PS4 in exchange for a fair and honest review.
