As is the case with many industries, the video game industry is one that's very male-dominated. You only have to take a look at the majority of players in the likes of the Overwatch League and beyond to see that females just aren't being as represented as we would like.

With that being said, there are those women going above and beyond to prove themselves. Here, we'll focus on a few of those, as well as delving into some of the most famous fictional female characters from the world of video games!

The real women making waves

British YouTuber LDShadowLady is one of the most popular across the globe, thanks to her Minecraft gameplay. Also known for her Shadowcraft series, this 26-year-old has proved that what men can do, women can sometimes do better.

Yammy is another popular Brit known for her Minecraft series, as well as Roblox videos. Having fallen pregnant in her teenage years, she stood up and ensured her dream of becoming a popular YouTuber became a reality!

Then there's Yogscast Hannah, whose real name is Hannah Rutherford. Born in Britain back in 1988, she worked as a Public Relation Officer before graduating to Operations Manager at Yogscast. She's known for tackling some of the longer single-player games such as the Assassin's Creed series and more.

Our favourite video game females

There's an increasing trend of leading female characters in video games. One of the very first was Samus Aran, who made her debut appearance in 1986's Metroid.

Of course, one of the most famous female characters is Lara Croft, who has led a number of different Tomb Raider titles throughout the years. Not only has she dominated the gaming industry, but she's been brought to life in cinema by both Angelina Jolie, and more recently, Alicia Vikander.

One of the best recent additions to the ranks of amazing female characters, is Horizon Zero Dawn's lead, Aloy. She's a fierce and loyal youngster who's chasing answers about her past, and exactly where she came from.

Genres we love

It's been found that women in general prefer mobile games, with the puzzle genre coming out on top. Finding hidden objects or words, or answering general knowledge questions is a favourite thing to do.

Men prefer games to do with shooting, aiming and speed due to the belief that men do more rescue missions compared to their female counterparts.

Popular casino games such as slots at cashino.com are played by both women and men.

The world's most famous

When it comes to the most popular gaming YouTuber of all, a man comes out on top. PewDiePie has over 60 million subscribers, and makes one of the biggest wages from his career as a YouTuber in the world.

Hopefully one day, we'll see a female gamer or eSports mover and shaker as successful as him, if not more!
