It's officially Super Mario Day today (March 10), so we've decided to take a look at five of the pizza-loving plumbers best outfits, delving into exactly what they brought to the world of Mario.

Perhaps the most recognisable power-up for Mario is the fire flower, which transformed the plumber into a red and white fire-wielding superhero able to fend off any Goomba who got in his way with some great, fiery balls. Appearing throughout most of the major instalments in the franchise, Fire Mario is here to stay, and we're thankful for it.

Remember the times you'd just about think you had enough space to jump over a certain drop in a Mario game, but you'd just fall short and lose one of your coveted lives? No more, with the Propeller Mario outfit! In his (very slimming) red jumpsuit (which also comes in green for Luigi!), Mario and his brother could even carry characters across large expanses, allowing them to grab hold of their feet!

Cat Mario - first seen in Super Mario 3D World

Cuteness OVERLOAD. Mario's entire behaviour shifted in 3D World, with the character purring, running on all fours and granted the ability to climb walls with his claws whilst in the Cat Mario outfit. Just like a real cat, he's good at destroying almost anything that comes into his line of sight and is a real force to be reckoned with.

Though he's also dressed as a tanooki and racoon, this has to be the cutest flying outfit available for Mario, adding to his animal costumes with one that would finally allow the player to grab onto walls without slipping down to certain death.

Boo Mario - first seen in Super Mario Galaxy

Boo is a character that's been facing off against Mario for quite some time in the franchise, but it wasn't until Super Mario Galaxy where players were able to transform the main man himself into a ghostly apparition. With the ability to go invisible and float through walls, it was certainly a powerful outfit that even left Luigi shaking in his boots.
