The Nintendo Switch was released back in 2017, with a wide variety of games ported from other consoles like Mario Kart, and original games such as Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Since then, the console has risen sharply in popularity, and now it seems to be overtaking one of the most beloved consoles.

The Switch is a portable, light and fun console for party games, racing games, and a multitude of other genres. Its popularity came from not only the games available on it, but also the fact that it can be both hooked up to your TV and carried around in your bag.

Since 2017, we have gotten the Nintendo Switch Lite (released in 2019); this new console came in four stunning pastel colours and was made for those who tend to travel more, as the Lite is available for handheld mode only.

This year (2021), fans of Nintendo will see another new Switch console releasing on October 8th; the OLED version of the portable console has a bigger screen, a wider stand, and a variety of other amazing features.

As of June this year, according to Mejores Apuestas, Nintendo Switch sales have increased dramatically, and are almost beating the 2006 console: the PlayStation 3 (PS3) in lifetime sales.

PlayStation has had an amazing career, with the Sony consoles being host to a number of iconic games and characters, such as the Crash Bandicoot and Tomb Raider franchises. However, it seems that after 15 years, the PS3 isn’t as popular as it used to be.

Nintendo have, as of June 2021, sold around 86.7 million units of Switch consoles and is close to reaching the number of PS3 lifetime shipments.

Nintendo Switch outsold the Xbox 360 by 0.9 million units, only 0.7 million below PS3 lifetime sales.

The console, being a combination of a handheld and stationary device, sold 13.1 million units in its release year alone; sales continued to climb in the subsequent years, with Nintendo close to 40 million Switch units in both 2018 and 2019.

When 2020 reached its end, the lifetime sales for Switch hit almost 77 million units, which is a colossal increase of 55% in just one year.

The PS4, released in 2013, is ahead of the Switch in terms of sales by 28.97 million units, and is 3 million away from outselling the classic Game Boy (released in 1989), which has sold 118.69 million units in its lifetime.

With the original Nintendo Switch able to be used in both stationary and handheld mode, it is almost no surprise that the console was (and still is) so popular. As the console has an updated version releasing in October 2021, will this amp up the already rising number of sales?
