The video game giant teased fans with a clip of classic gameplay from the beloved title to celebrate their 60th anniversary, and the beloved favourite will be returning in a special way.

The teaser video mostly showed footage of 'Virtua Fighter' tournaments and ended with a shot of Akira Yuki, the face of the fighting franchise, while the company said rather than a new game, 'Virtua Fighter' "will be restarted as an esports title to commemorate the 60th anniversary of SEGA's establishment".

CEO Haruki Satomi unveiled the latest project during the Tokyo Game Show live stream.

The news was also confirmed on the Sega Official Twitter account, saying: "The monumental tower of the case game is finally back in e-sports! 'Virtua Fighter x esports project' announced!

"'Virtua Fighter', which was born as the world's first 3D fighting game in 1993, will be restarted in Japan to commemorate the 60th anniversary of SEGA's establishment. Stay tuned for future updates! (sic)"

The original title was first introduced to fans in 1993, but the series has been dormant since the 2012 release of 'Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown'.

It was released in arcades in 2010 before being ported to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 two years later, and is still playable in the virtual arcades of several games in Sega's 'Yakuza' series.
