The highly-anticipated game is set to launch on PC and Xbox Series X and S, with Microsoft confirming the news during the Xbox and Bethesda show.

During in-game footage of the new title, a voiceover mysteriously explains: "We've come to the beginning of humanity's final journey. That's why we've come here, to discover what's out there."

Bethesda's Todd Howard has also revealed that making 'Starfield' has been a long-held ambition of his and for the team behind the new game.

Todd told The Washington Post newspaper: "It’s a next-generation role-playing game where you’ll be who you want, go where you want, experience our stories and forge your own.

"More than that, 'Starfield' is about hope, our shared humanity and searching for the answers to life’s greatest mystery."

Meanwhile, Piers Harding-Rolls, a games analyst at Ampere, has explained how Microsoft's strategy involves embracing new games from third party developers.

He told the BBC: "Certain types of new games are particularly suited to Game Pass - generally those that benefit more from a ready-made audience compared to just competing with other premium releases in the store."
