Initially released all the way back in May 2019, we finally got the chance to check out Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland's video game creation Trover Saves the Universe when we got our hands on an Oculus Quest. The result? A lot of laughs!
Players are transported into a colourful and mysterious world in Trover Saves the Universe, tasked with bringing order to the cosmos following the theft of your two VERY sweet doggos. You take the role of a nameless Chairorpian (an alien species who spend their entire lives confined to chairs) throughout the game, and assume control of purple alien Trover, who can help you move around.
Your character moves Trover around using a controller that's in their constant possession, and moves from one area to another using teleporter pads. This keeps you stationary for the majority of the game, but lends you the ability to really take in each of the locations you visit, whilst fully-immersed thanks to the Oculus Quest headset. Those who suffer with motion sickness shouldn't come across any problems here.
It's an extremely basic system, which is for the best when you're taking part in VR. You don't want a whole mismash of different buttons and controls that could risk taking you out of the whole experience, so this decision was one that - whilst it wouldn't have been good enough on a regular platform - is perfect for the Quest.
What really matters when it comes to a title like this however, is whether or not the humour and punchlines land. After spending four hours in the story before it reached its conclusion, my jaw was hurting due to all the laughter it had induced. It's genuinely one of the most hilarious video games I've ever had the pleasure of playing.
As previously mentioned, the overall experience may be chipped away at for those who are playing without virtual reality, so if you are looking to indulge and give it a try, and you've got the funds to pick up a VR platform, make sure you do so! The Oculus Quest is the perfect, wireless VR headset to get it done, at an affordable rate.
