The standalone free-to-play game - which is being developed by 'Ghost Recon' studio Red Storm Entertainment - is due to drop on Xbox, PlayStation and PC at some point 2021 or 2022.

The company has unveiled plans for the new title, and fans have already been invited to register in joining playtests.

Ubisoft noted that gamers won't need to know anything about the franchise as a whole to enjoy the new title, which promises an "all-new perspective" on the series "in a new setting".

The team are also working on a mobile 'Division' game, although no further details are available at the moment.

Meanwhile, the studio has revealed some information on a new novel coming from Aconyte.

They said: "This new story is set after the events of 'The Division 2' and explores how the Outbreak affects different regions of the United States as agents fight to secure supply routes."

Regarding new content coming to 'The Division 2' itself, Ubisoft added: "While it's still too early to discuss any specific details, this update will include an entirely new game mode for 'The Division' franchise and new methods for levelling your agents with an emphasis on increasing build variety and viability.

"We look forward to revealing more later this year ahead of this content's late 2021 release."

The company also revealed Rawson Marshall Thurber has replaced David Leitch as director of Netflix's 'Division' film, with Jessica Chastain and Jake Gyllenhaal still lined up to star.
