The Pill has now been used for 56 years, since 1956 in Puerto Rico, but there are still plenty of ‘Pill Scares’ placed around it.

Whilst it still remains incredibly popular as a form of contraception it proves that the risks it does in fact have are far outweighed by the benefits it holds too.

The Pill is undeniably safe, but it still holds some serious side-effects, these include:

  • Raised blood pressure
  • A very small number of women may develop a blood clot, which can block a vein (venous thrombosis) or an artery (arterial thrombosis, heart attack or stroke)
  • A small increase in risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer
  • A small increase in the risk of cervical cancer if the pill is used continuously for more than five years

A lot of people also complain that the pill makes them gain weight, whereas it in fact just raises your appetite, so if you succumb to the bars of chocolate and packets of crisp daily, you’re eventually going to gain some weight.

If you’re just starting to think about the taking the pill it should be noted that you will need to have a preliminary chat with your doctor or family planning nurse beforehand, and a short check-up. This is just to check to see whether you have any risk factors, especially smoking, that would make you more liable to deep vein thrombosis (DVT), heart attacks or strokes.
