Eating breakfast cereal is a great way to increase your nutrients for the rest of the day

Eating cereal for breakfast is having a positive effect on your diet, as those who eat it are more likely to eat more nutrients, according to two new studies.

A study evaluating the breakfast habits of school children found that those who ate breakfast has greater intakes of vitamins A and C, calcium, iron, dietary fibre, and whole grain.

Not only has this but they also had healthier body weights too.

In the second study, breakfast cereal consumption was associated with improved nutrient adequacy in adults.

Breakfast consumers, and to a greater extent ready-to-eat cereal breakfast consumers, had significantly higher intakes of fibre and vitamins and minerals than people who did not eat breakfast.

Sarah West, nutritionist, from the Breakfast Cereal Information Service, says:

“These two new studies confirm what has been demonstrated in many other studies (reviewed by Gibson & Gunn) - that both children and adults who consume ready to eat breakfast cereals have improved nutrient intake compared with people who do not eat breakfast and those who eat other types of breakfast. They add to the body of evidence that suggests the benefit of breakfast cereal consumption in terms of improved nutrient intake.”
