Water is your friend when you have a hangover

Water is your friend when you have a hangover

Tis the season to be jolly, but with a seemingly endless stream of parties to enjoy over Christmas and New Year, it can be all too easy to overindulge.

Fiona Hunter is a nutritionist and member of the Simple Advisory Board here she shares some tips for hangover help.

She says: “Of course we all know that that best way to avoid a hangover is to avoid overindulging but it’s often easier said than done.

"Not only will your head be banging but your skin will suffer too. Hung-over skin can be very dry as alcohol dehydrates and nobody wants flaky, sore skin during party season!

"Alcohol also interrupts your sleep patterns which can make dark circles under the eyes appear worse.”

Fiona has come up some tips below to help support your head – and your skin – through the holidays.

If you know you’ve got a heavy night ahead of you and you’re not planning to have a meal, at least have a low Glycemic Index (GI) snack such as  a bowl of cereal with a banana, a couple of oatcakes with hummus or peanut butter on wholemeal toast before you go out.

If you’re drinking wine avoid top ups when the glass isn’t empty, otherwise it’s hard to keep track of how much you’ve drunk.

Try to remember to match each alcoholic drink with a glass of water or a soft drink and try to remember to have a large glass of water before you go to bed.

If you do wake up with a hangover try a large glass of apple juice, sweetened with a little honey, topped up with a little sparkling water.

It’s gentler on the stomach than orange juice and provides an instant hit of glucose which will help restore blood sugar levels, Vitamin C and fluid to rehydrate the body.

Tempting as they may be, avoid greasy fry ups. Eat something like a bowl of cereal or a slice of wholemeal toast with honey, which is easy for your body to digest.

Drinking too much alcohol, combined with late nights and too much partying can disrupt the balance of good and bad bacteria in your intestine so take a probiotic supplement to restore the balance of good and bad bacteria.
