Food isn’t always the villain in the tale of oral health. As much as sugary sweets and soft drinks can do great harm on our teeth, there’s a wide range of healthy, light snacks that can overall boost our pearly whites’ defences.

Plaque does serious damage to your teeth as it causes gum disease and tooth decay. Yikes. Food such as sour candies, carbonated drinks, and potato chips are all bad for your teeth. Alongside brushing your teeth and maintain great mouth hygiene, make sure to avoid these foods.

London Smiling’s Dr. Uchenna Okoye qualified at the prestigious Guy’s Hospital, King’s College. So, it’s safe to say she knows a thing or two about how to care for your teeth. Today, she’s bringing us her top five snacks that can do everything form prevent cavities to freshen breath:

1. Sugar-free Gum – sugar-free chewing gum is great to eat in between meals and snacks, especially after sugary or acidic ones. It will keep your mouth moist and the increased saliva helps to neutralise the acids that break down your tooth enamel.

2. Apples - apples are sweet, but high in fibre and water. Eating an apple increases your saliva, which rinses away bacteria and food particles. The fibrous tissues stimulate your gums, maybe not as effective as brushing with fluoride, but very much a step in the right direction.

3. Carrots - carrots eaten raw at the end of the meal increase saliva, overall reducing the risk of cavities and washing away foods from the mouth. They contain lots of water and require hearty chewing. They’re also a great source of vitamin A.

4. Almonds - almonds are a great source of calcium and protein and are low in sugar.

5. Leafy greens - fibrous vegetables are always excellent staple in any healthy diet.
