The latest must-do on a bride’s to-do list is to have her teeth whitened, according to new research from Bupa Dental. A survey found that more than one in four brides-to-be plan to have their teeth whitened before their big day.

It’s not just one for the women, with one in five grooms-to-be also saying they will have their teeth whitened in preparation for their wedding.

As teeth whitening becomes safer and more widely available, it is growing in popularity – two in five Bupa dentists have noticed an increase in brides and grooms asking for teeth whitening. Rates seem to be rising sharply, with one in four of those currently planning their wedding saying they will have their teeth whitened, compared to one in eight people who got married within the last three years.

Bupa Dental, which commissioned the research for National Smile Month, also found that nearly one in ten people planning their wedding intends to get their teeth straightened before their special day.

The pressure on a bride to look perfect for her wedding is nothing new, and three in five brides rate looking their best on their big day as their priority.

Wedding photo nightmares

When asked about their wedding photos, those planning their wedding felt that having yellow teeth in the pictures would be one of their worst nightmares. People who were already married listed crooked teeth among the things they regret when looking back at their wedding album.

I love your smile

Straight, white teeth are not just for the wedding day. A nice smile ranked top among the characteristics which first attracted people to their partners. Next on the list was the eyes, followed by physique, hair and dress sense.

When I’m 64

That dazzling smile continues to be important to couples long after the big day, with one in four people saying they would be put off if their partner’s teeth became crooked or yellow. This was the second biggest turn-off after becoming overweight, followed by a bald patch or receding hairline, middle aged spread and losing too much weight.

Dr Steve Preddy, clinical director of dentistry, Bupa said:

“Being happy with your appearance is key to feeling confident. It’s now easier and safer than ever to get the smile you’ve always wanted. A smile you want to show off is an accessory that will last a lifetime.”
