Keep your diet balanced with broccoli this year

With the cold weather and indulgence of Christmas, our health can become compromised. But don’t worry as broccoli can help to balance it all out.

During winter, we are all guilty of eating more and exercising less, which can have a negative impact on the efficiency of our metabolism. This is where Beneforté broccoli comes in. A new study shows that a naturally occurring compound called glucoraphanin in broccoli can help to ‘re-tune’ the metabolism and reduce the amount of fatty-acids in our blood.

What’s more is that the benefit of a diet rich in glucoraphanin goes beyond reducing the guilt of mince pies, Christmas dinner and extra-long sessions in front of the TV. The study suggests that increased levels of glucoraphanin may even help to protect against chronic diseases such as obesity, Type II diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and some forms of cancer. Glucoraphanin is found in all broccoli, however, Beneforté broccoli reliably contains 2-3 times more glucoraphanin than standard broccoli.

This research, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, provided the first evidence from human studies to connect glucoraphanin, the compound found in broccoli, with a positive impact on our health. In particular, it was an improved metabolism that was observed in those with increased glucoraphanin in their diets. Metabolism describes the activity of our cells and the rate at which dietary fats and sugars are used up, stored, or exported to be used by the cell as the building blocks to make other compounds needed for health.  It is in improving these processes that glucoraphanin may contribute to the reduced risk of obesity, Type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease and even some cancers.
