Have you gained weight because of the weather?

The dreadful weather in recent months has had a weighty impact on the nation’s health and wellbeing.

A survey by The National Lottery Good Causes shows that 33% of adults and an incredible 38% of adult women admit to piling on the pounds because they’ve been spending more time stuck indoors due to the recent cold weather.

Of these women, more than half said they have gained 4.7 pounds (2kg) or more and 1 in 5 have put on at least half a stone.

The online research by YouGov also shows that most UK adults believe the bad weather has had a negative effect on their mental health/wellbeing.

The National Lottery is encouraging more people to get active, whatever the weather.  In the last five years, over £2 billion of National Lottery funding has been invested in community sport and projects that boost people’s health and wellbeing – providing a range of opportunities in every area.

Jackie O’Sullivan, National Lottery Good Causes spokesperson said,

“Getting fit, healthier and feeling better about life were new year’s resolutions for many people.  These results show the best of intentions have gone out of the window with people stuck indoors in the dreadful weather.  National Lottery funding gives people low and no cost ways of improving their health and wellbeing in their own areas.  It has improved community and sports centres, parks, the National Cycle Route, walking paths and nature trails across the UK.  The Bank Holiday and promise of better weather make this the perfect time to get fit and healthy. ”
